I watched this movie as part of the NewFest virtual film festival in NYC. I am so glad I decided on this movie. White Lie is about a college student, Katie, who fakes having cancer for attention and money. She has everyone fooled, including her girlfriend. I'm not sure if I was meant to hate Katie, but I have to say she is an infuriating person throughout the movie. The movie takes place over five days, and during the whole time, you are just wondering what could go wrong next. It was a well-made movie with excellent actors and cinematography.
Something that I enjoyed about this movie was how they incorporated the lesbian plot. Often, someone realizing they are a lesbian or the struggles of being a lesbian takes up the main story of the movie. In this movie, Katie and her girlfriend's relationship are never an issue, much like in a straight film. I feel this is the progress and normalization that LGBTQ+ people need in the film industry, and I appreciated the director's choice.
